Is this the trip for you?
If you are culturally flexible and enjoy delicious and possibly unfamiliar foods; meet fascinating and hospitable people; experience new customs; and visit amazing out of the way places, this is the tour for you. We welcome anyone who sincerely enjoys group travel with all its inherent benefits and challenges.
Most of our days will be spent out of doors. A major part of each day’s activities will involve walking or moderate hiking. Participation in this trip requires excellent physical fitness and the ability to hike at least two miles at a moderate pace, usually on hilly terrain that may be steep or rocky.
To ensure that you’ll be welcomed into worlds on Crete that few tourists even know exist, we ask all participants to be open minded, flexible and willing to follow our suggested guidelines for appropriate wardrobe choices and behavior.
Because we want to introduce you to the Cretan way of life, for the first six nights of the tour you should be ready to live like a native of Crete. Unlike the United States, where limitless access to electricity and running water is often taken for granted, electricity and water services on Crete are sometimes temporarily interrupted without notice. The accommodations in Kritsa don’t include room service, TV, telephones in the room, Internet access, or a 24-hour front desk. However, you will be treated as an honored guest by your fastidious and gracious hosts and stay in a spotlessly clean and very comfortable room.
The last two nights of the tour, you’ll stay in a modern hotel in Iraklion where typical hotel amenities are readily available.
We’ll enjoy many of our meals at small family restaurants that don’t rely on menus. They simply cook several mouth-watering dishes from the freshest ingredients available that day in their own gardens or from local sources. Meals throughout the tour are served family style.
This tour is not for you if your idea of a dream trip to Greece includes spending long, sunny days lying in the sun on a white sandy beach (April can be cool); meditating under a full moon inside an ancient “goddess” site (all archaeological sites are closed to visitors at night); or being swept off your feet by a handsome Greek ship captain (chances are very slim…) However, we will gladly help you make arrangements to pursue these fantasies before or after the tour.
